World Vision implemented the Educating Children Together (ECT-3) project in Mozambique, funded by the USDA from October 1, 2019, to September 30, 2024. The project aimed to improve literacy for school-aged children in the Muecate and Nacarôa districts of Nampula Province, in collaboration with local ministries and partners. ECT-3 focused on fostering community and parental engagement to support children’s education, particularly through strategies like Reading Awareness Workshops, Reading Clubs, and book banks.

To understand the barriers and enabling factors that influence caregivers and community members in supporting literacy, a formative study was commissioned. The study, conducted in Nampula, explores behaviors around literacy promotion and identifies factors that impact caregivers’ and communities’ engagement in children’s learning. The findings are intended to inform future program strategies and improve the content of literacy resources such as the “Unlock Literacy: Community Strategies to Promote Literacy” flipbook and workshops for parents. The research highlights the importance of integrating informal community institutions and addressing challenges faced by impoverished families in supporting long-term educational goals.
