The Homes and Communities (Uburezi Iwacu) project, implemented by World Vision Rwanda, Imbuto Foundation, Humanity & Inclusion, and local partners since 2021, works to create literacy-supportive, stimulating, and inclusive environments for all children—including children with disabilities—in every district of Rwanda. Responding to challenges such as low parental involvement (only 1 in 5 parents were engaged in learning activities at baseline) and limited resources for children with disabilities, the project has reached over 1 million children by January 2025, including those from ultra-poor and remote communities. It aims to improve home literacy environments, boost parent and caregiver capacity, expand community engagement, and enhance learning opportunities for children with disabilities. Through parent peer support networks, inclusive education advocacy, and local partnerships, the project promotes early language, social-emotional development, and sustainable community-led solutions. Evidence from baseline surveys, annual reports, and learning discussions demonstrates the project’s significant impact on children’s well-being, school retention, and civic inclusion, with youth and caregivers playing active leadership roles throughout.
