In low- and middle-income countries, half of healthcare facilities lack safe water and a third lack proper sanitation. In Mali, assessments across eight regions revealed major gaps — up to 97% of facilities lacked adequate healthcare waste management.
From 2017–2020, World Vision Mali, supported by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, worked in Koro and Kolokani to improve WASH services using a phased approach. This included installing short- and long-term infrastructure, training healthcare workers, implementing the WASH minimum standards package, and introducing BabyWASH. World Vision also partnered with WHO and the Ministry of Health to roll out WASH FIT for facility self-monitoring. The CDC tracked progress via baseline, midline, and endline assessments.
